Writer and illustrator Patricia Saxton was the youngest of four children. She grew up in a busy household but found a quiet oasis in drawing and painting. “My love of art made me an easy child to keep entertained. Just give me some crayons and a piece of paper and I’m in heaven!” Patricia says.

Growing up in rural New Jersey, Patricia found plenty of beautiful things to sketch: flowers, rolling hills, stonewalls, and her family’s beautiful gardens. Even today, she finds that nature is her ultimate source of inspiration.

After graduating from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, she studied art at the School of Visual Art, in New York City. Later, she founded Saxton Studios, and for more than 20 years, worked as a successful graphic designer and copywriter.

Patricia never thought about creating a children’s book until her daughter, Carolyn, became interested in mermaids. “We looked in every bookstore and gift shop for books about mermaids and there really wasn’t anything out there. So I decided to spend the summer writing about mermaids…where they live, their culture, their traditions, even their jewelry!”

Her first book, The Book of Mermaids, described as “the quintessential book of mermaidology,” combines traditional watercolor, pen-and-ink, and colored-pencil techniques with computer effects Patricia learned as a graphic designer.

Her latest book, A Book of Fairies, offers an in-depth look into the magical world of fairies!
